Module Introduction

The artist’s palette beckons to our inner creative energies with the promise of applying the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design. This module is a journey and an exploration in defining major principles of art, such as color, pattern and linear movement, and then applying those principles to our own creative visual art works. This module is a journey and an exploration for you as an appreciation of art and a creator of visual art to apply the many principles of design and the elements of art that will be presented.

With a number of major principles of design, this module encompasses a range of areas, including geometric and dimensional components. For instance, the first lesson explores rhythm, movement and pattern, which is not only found on the dance floor; it’s also seen in visual art! Visual art has many faces, many forms and a multiple materials from which artists can choose, however, there are still some basic areas that apply across painting, sculpting, sketching, digital art and architecture. These basic areas are The Elements of Art and the Principles of Design, and they are the crux of the fundamental approaches to both creating art and analyzing art. In our journeys as artists and analysts, we encounter the elements of art and the principles of design in a number of ways. Lesson 1 initiates our exploration of these basics with visual components like pattern, depth, linear movement, dominance and unity.
